The School's Curriculum

 Beckwithshaw offers a broad and balanced curriculum that ensures continuity and progression for each child. The curriculum is relevant to all our children and meets their educational needs. We recognise the importance of ensuring high standards in numeracy and literacy and have adopted the National Strategies as ways of teaching these subjects.

In the Foundation Stage the children follow a curriculum based on the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.  In years 1 to 6 children follow the National Curriculum which covers:

• Core subjects – English, maths, science, information technology

• Foundation subjects – geography, history, design technology, art, music, physical education and Religious education.

We also place emphasis on Personal Social and Emotional Development, as we believe this is a vital area of learning for all children. 

In the early years of school we place great emphasis on active learning and creating meaningful and exciting experiences for all the children. Further up the school we use activities that capture the children’s interest and fire their enthusiasm as we all believe that if school is fun children will learn.

Children are taught through a variety of approaches – whole class, group sessions and individual teaching. The different learning styles of children are recognised and planned for.  Much of the learning takes place through practical experience, investigation and increasingly problem solving. All children in the early years and KS1 have access to outdoor learning on a regular basis. Full use is made of the enclosed courtyard which is accessible through the FS/KS1 classroom.

We believe in enriching the curriculum through visits and having visitors in school. We also plan themed weeks such as “Africa week” and “Arts week”.

Every other year we take our Y5/6 children on a residential visit, offering the opportunity to engage in adventurous outdoor activities beyond those provided in school. In previous years we have visited  Robinwood Activity Centre in Cumbria and Robin Hoods Bay.
